Why the Name StephenThe name Stephen comes from St. Stephen, who was the first lay person commissioned by the apostles to provide caring ministry to those in need (as recorded in Acts 6).
Sometimes people need care. They need someone with a listening ear and an empathetic heart to help them get through a tough time. If you know someone who needs care, a good first step would be to discuss the situation with your pastor. He or she may be able to suggest some options.
But realize that often a pastor doesn't have enough hours in the day or the week to give all the people the focused, long-term care that they need--the kind of care that Stephen Ministers provide. What the person needs is a Stephen Minister.
Stephen Ministers are those trained and supervised lay caregivers who provide one-to-one Christian care to hurting people. Stephen Ministers are trained to care in a wide variety of situations. They care for people with many life challenges. Loss of a loved one? Job loss? Relocation? Difficulties with children? Illness? Injury? Stephen Ministers extend the ability of pastors to provide care for hurting people. They can give focused, one-to-one care, week after week, as long as the person needs it. That care makes an immense difference in the lives of their care receivers.
If you would like to talk to a Stephen Minister, first contact your Pastor who will then refer you to the Stephen Ministry Leader. That leader will assign you to one of our Stephen Ministers. However, if you would prefer a Stephen Minister from another congregation, someone you do no know personally, the Leader will be able to arrange for your needs.
Your needs are critical and so is the confidentiality associated with this type of ministry. You can rest assured that your words will remain sealed.
